The Adventures of Sheila the Spider
(Balboa Press, 2025)
Book Review: The Adventures of Sheila the Spider by L. Peter Jones

From the moment I started reading, Sheila's character grabbed my attention. You’ve done an excellent job of making her relatable and likable, with a depth that’s rare in children’s literature. Her journey from confusion and fear to strength and hope is truly inspiring. It’s also wonderful how you subtly introduce themes of freedom, self-discovery, and resilience, which are important for young minds to encounter.
The pacing is just right for a short children’s book. The way Sheila’s adventures unfold keeps the reader engaged and eager to find out what happens next. The stakes feel high, and I found myself rooting for Sheila every step of the way. I also appreciate the way you introduce light-hearted moments alongside the tension—like her playful chase of the tiny human figures—which adds a wonderful balance of excitement and fun.
I was also really struck by the emotional depth in the latter part of the story. Sheila’s bravery, her bond with her fellow spiders, and the unexpected twist of James rescuing them all are so moving. The final resolution offers a perfect, heartwarming conclusion that leaves a lasting, positive message. It’s clear that a lot of thought and heart went into this story, and it shines through beautifully.

Fox in Town
(Book Guild Ltd)
Book Review: Fox in Town by L. Peter Jones

"Fox in Town" is the hilarious story of Mr Plum, a Lottery-winning elderly milkman, who retires with his fortune to a small town in the countryside. When the local people learn of Mr Plum's wealth they are so desperate to keep him as a high-spending member of the town, that they resort to reintroducing the now outlawed tradition of fox hunting in order to impress him. However, the townsfolk have no idea just how big a mistake this is, not having reckoned with Mr Plum's compassionate nature, or the cunning and intelligence of the local fox population. Illustrated throughout with humorous drawings by Jorge Matheus, L. Peter Jones' second book for children, "Fox in Town", is a funny and engaging story of the triumph of kindness over greed, which will appeal to both adults and children alike.

Cracks, Doors, Windows and a Story-Telling Tree
(Balboa Press, 2019 and Rushmore Press,2020 )
Book Review: Cracks, Doors, Windows, and a Story-Telling Tree by L. Peter Jones
L. Peter Jones’ Cracks, Doors, Windows, and a Story-Telling Tree is a beautifully written collection of
three short stories that invites readers into a world where personal growth and introspection are as
integral to life as the inevitable pain and suffering we all endure. Through vivid imagery and rich
symbolism, Jones crafts a narrative that explores the transformative power of embracing one’s inner
journey while navigating external challenges.
The stories in this collection are tied together by a common thread: the idea that harmony within
ourselves leads to a deeper understanding of the world around us. In Cracks, we witness how
vulnerability, represented by the metaphorical cracks in our lives, is not something to be feared but an
essential part of our growth. The characters learn that it is through these cracks that light can enter,
illuminating the path toward healing and enlightenment.
In Doors, the motif of choice becomes prominent, suggesting that the doors we open—or choose not
to—dictate the direction of our growth. Jones captures the subtle complexity of decision-making and
the peace that comes when we accept both the opportunities and the consequences they bring.
Windows then follows, focusing on perspective. The window symbolizes a portal through which we
see not only the world but ourselves. Through the lens of this story, Jones reminds us that our
perception of life’s hardships can shift when we allow ourselves to look beyond the surface and
explore deeper meanings.
Finally, the Story-Telling Tree serves as a culmination of the themes. This piece weaves the power of
storytelling and the wisdom it imparts into the narrative. It beautifully connects the cycles of life with
nature’s wisdom, showing that, like a tree, we grow stronger and more grounded as we share our
stories, our pains, and our triumphs.
Jones’ prose is elegant, evocative, and accessible, guiding the reader through a gentle but profound
exploration of human nature. The collection is philosophical yet grounded, offering insight into the
human condition without feeling overly abstract or inaccessible. The rhythm of his storytelling flows
effortlessly, encouraging readers to pause and reflect on the deeper truths hidden within the
everyday.
At its core, Cracks, Doors, Windows, and a Story-Telling Tree is a meditation on resilience, inner
peace, and the beauty of finding balance amid life’s complexities. It’s a poignant reminder that growth
and healing often come from the spaces where we feel most vulnerable. This book is a perfect choice
for anyone seeking inspiration, introspection, and the quiet assurance that, despite the inevitable
cracks and challenges we face, there is light and peace to be found on the other side.
